The Broncos exacted revenge against the Gophers in rematch
In 2022, the Florence boys’ basketball team pulled off a stunning victory over the Poston Butte Broncos in the Eddie Martinez Invitational championship, seizing the win in the game’s final moments.
Fast forward to 2023, and amidst new faces and transitions within the Broncos’ squad, they sought redemption in this year’s championship bout, prevailing with a 61-51 win against the Gophers.
Throughout the game, both teams showcased tenacious defense, refusing to yield an advantage to their opponent. Despite the Gophers’ efforts, they found themselves trailing at halftime, facing a 31-24 deficit.
Poston Butte’s junior, Dutch Martinez, and senior, Connor Martin, emerged as pivotal figures for the revamped Broncos. Under the guidance of new head coach Ricky Jordan, Martinez demonstrated his prowess with 32 points, 15 of which came in the first half. Martin, though quieter on the scoring front, showcased his impact through dominant rebounds and impressive playmaking abilities.
Coach Jordan lauded the duo’s contributions but emphasized the team’s collective effort, highlighting their unity and improved cohesion on the court.
The Gophers displayed resilience, narrowing the Broncos’ lead to a mere five points in the fourth quarter, courtesy of sharpshooter junior Gavin McGill’s impressive shooting and agile plays.
Despite Florence’s spirited fight, the Broncos’ superior size and athleticism secured their victory, allowing them to claim the championship trophy.
Coach Silvas, acknowledging his team’s desire to win, expressed pride in their valiant performance against formidable opponents, especially after an initial struggle in the tournament’s early days.
Following the tournament, both teams anticipate a brief hiatus for the winter break, returning refreshed and ready to resume their basketball endeavors in the upcoming year.
