In the spirit of the swiftly approaching Christmas festivities, the Maricopa Police Department upheld its heartwarming tradition by hosting the annual “Shop with a Cop” event, marking 15 years of community generosity and support.

Chief Mark Goodman highlighted the essence of the event, emphasizing its significance in granting 28 elementary and middle school students from Maricopa an opportunity to partake in the joy of the season. Selected by their schools based on need, these youngsters became recipients of MPD’s benevolent gesture on December 9.

“It’s about offering a remarkable Christmas to kids who might not typically have this chance,” Chief Goodman expressed, underlining the event’s noble purpose.

Commencing with a delightful breakfast courtesy of the Maricopa Lions Club, the day commenced with an air of festivity. Children reveled in the opportunity to dine, socialize, and capture cherished moments with Santa and Mrs. Claus, setting the stage for a day filled with joy and goodwill.

The highlight of the day unfolded as the children were escorted to Walmart, each paired with an MPD officer and armed with a $200 budget, generously provided by the Maricopa Police Foundation. Empowered to fulfill their holiday wishes, the youngsters navigated the aisles, carefully selecting gifts that would bring smiles not only to their faces but also to those of their family members.

“It’s heartwarming to witness how these kids often think of others,” remarked Goodman. “They not only pick something for themselves but also allocate funds to ensure their family and siblings have a joyous Christmas.”

Beyond the act of giving, Chief Goodman emphasized the multifaceted impact of “Shop with a Cop.” This annual tradition not only extends support to the less fortunate but also plays a pivotal role in strengthening the bond between law enforcement and the community.

He emphasized how the event presents a welcoming and non-confrontational side of law enforcement, fostering a positive rapport with the community. Moreover, it serves as a catalyst for nurturing relationships with families, reinforcing ties between the police department and the youth, and collaborating closely with the school district and local charter schools to identify and support children in need during the holiday season.

“More than gifts, ‘Shop with a Cop’ is about fostering connections, building trust, and spreading the joy of the season within our community,” Chief Goodman affirmed, encapsulating the essence of this heartening tradition.
