It’s unclear what led up to the shooting. During a Friday afternoon news conference, Chief Sullivan said the suspect was prohibited from possessing a gun and was well known to officers. Joining Chief Sullivan was Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, who had just met with the injured officer prior to talking with reporters. “We’re starting this year in a way we did not want to.” Mayor Gallego said.
