Uranium mine near the Grand Canyon draws outrage from Havasupai Tribe
Arizona tribes praised new federal protections around the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni Grand Canyon Monument enacted last year to preserve the land they consider sacred. However, despite those new protections, a uranium mine is digging in the location against local tribes’ wishes. The land about 15 miles south of the Grand Canyon around Red Butte Mountain is sacred to the Havasupai tribe. They use the land for ceremonies, medicine, and traditions.
