{"id":343,"date":"2023-12-20T22:03:53","date_gmt":"2023-12-21T05:03:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cbs26.com\/?p=343"},"modified":"2023-12-20T22:03:53","modified_gmt":"2023-12-21T05:03:53","slug":"i-10-study-looks-to-ease-traffic-congestion-and-crashes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cbs26.com\/index.php\/2023\/12\/20\/i-10-study-looks-to-ease-traffic-congestion-and-crashes\/","title":{"rendered":"I-10 study looks to ease traffic congestion and crashes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\">It\u2019s a drive most of us love to hate, and now, your voice is needed on possible improvements to a key downtown Phoenix corridor.<\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\">It\u2019s a stretch that includes the deck park tunnel, the I-10, I-17 split interchange and the mini stack.<\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\">There are a lot of on and off-ramps \u2013 and a lot of traffic.<\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\">Experts are working to collect data to analyze hot spots for congestion and make strategic improvements to keep vehicles moving safely.<\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\">Drivers described the area, saying:<\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\"><i>&#8220;I try to avoid it.&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\"><i>&#8220;It\u2019s a mess.&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\"><i>&#8220;Chaos.&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\"><i>&#8220;All of a sudden everything is like a salmon run. You\u2019re either stopped at a dam, and then all of a sudden there\u2019s a flood and everyone is shooting everywhere, and then again you stop.&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\">The freeway segment northeast of downtown Phoenix is a headache for many.<\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\">There\u2019s the deck park tunnel, the I-10, I-17 split, and the northeast interchange of the 10, 51, and Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway, known as the &#8220;mini-stack.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\">&#8220;This section of the road is very, very important to the entire region,&#8221; said Tim Strow, transportation policy and planning director with the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG).<\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\">With access to Phoenix Sky Harbor and downtown, Strow says the roadway is busy too.<\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\">&#8220;Over 300,000 people drive on this corridor every day,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\">Traffic isn\u2019t the only concern.<\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magi10study.mysocialpinpoint.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>PARTICIPATE IN THE SURVEY HERE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\">&#8220;Unfortunately, there are a lot of accidents that occur on this small segment of the roadway. We\u2019ve seen this in our data collection. About 12,000 accidents over a five-year period, which equates to about 5.4 accidents per day,&#8221; Strow said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\">With an average, MAG reports one of those accidents every month results in severe injury or death.<\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\">Strow says change is necessary.<\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\">That\u2019s why MAG is doing a community survey asking drivers about their commutes and the challenges they face.<\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\">You can even put in comments about specific areas that are especially congested.<\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\">Strow says your input will help them create a safer and more efficient roadway.<\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\">&#8220;It was time for us to address the safety issues and the traffic operations,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\">The deadline for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/magi10study.mysocialpinpoint.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>the survey is coming up on Dec. 22.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\">So, what happens after the survey ends?<\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\">This coming spring, there will be public meetings to discuss different alternatives based on the survey results.<\/p>\n<p data-v-43bc4c20=\"\">It will then go back to MAG Regional Council, and ultimately, it will be the framework for the improvements funded through Proposition 479 which will be on the ballot next fall.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s a drive most of us love to hate, and now, your voice is needed on possible improvements to a key downtown Phoenix corridor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":344,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[14,7],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.5 -
